A cool new mobile app is made just for bird watchers. Chirp! Bird Songs USA from Spiny Software costs $2.99, and on the first use the application for Apple devices will detect its location and then list the birds you are most likely to encounter there. This is very convenient for birdwatchers, who in the past had to lug around paperback field guides into the woods. The app is mostly designed for learning and identifying bird songs, and it even offers quizzes to test your learning progress.
It also provides links to articles at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Wikipedia about each listed species, and a version for iPad has features even larger bird pictures. The full app takes up 130 megabytes with all the recordings, but there is an older free version that only takes up 13 megabytes of space.
